Recipes and Tips for Sustainable Living review--Food Storage and Survival I recently had the opportunity to test out Recipes and Tips for Sustainable Living by Stacy Harris from Game and Garden.  This book is part recipe book and part how-to guide on living back to basics and sustainably from the land.  If you’re interested in cooking food that you have produced yourself, this is a fantastic reference for you.  And since any of the recipes could be adapted to use foods like beef or chicken and still be delicious, anyone who cooks would benefit from owning this little gem.

Stacy’s recipes focus on using wild game and garden produce and making them taste great!  Recipes for foods from the garden include squash, eggplant, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, figs and more.  Foraging recipes, and recipes using poultry, eggs, and honey are followed by recipes for using wild game like turkey, duck, and venison.  Each of the recipes is accompanied by a photograph so you’ll know how it’s supposed to look when it’s done.  This is a huge help to me, even though mine never look quite as nice as the picture.  Stacy also includes tips and techniques for making game meat less “gamey” and tough.  Check out this Stuffed Venison Meatloaf!

Are you hungry yet?  We actually made Stacy’s Tomato Pie.  Now I had never heard of making such a thing as Tomato Pie and I’ll tell you my husband was skeptical at best.  But he loved it!  It turned out so delicious!  And almost as nice looking as the example in the book.  Okay, not quite, but it tasted as good as Stacy’s picture looked.

We’ll be making more of these recipes for sure.  I have some elk in the freezer that really wants to be the Venison Scaloppine.  Really.  I heard it say so.  Or maybe that was my husband talking . . . Anyway, we’re going to give it a try.

I had the pleasure of talking with Stacy (and finding out we have way too much in common) on my podcast last month.  We did two episodes together and if you haven’t listened to those, they’re only 30 minutes each and there is a ton of great information shared about living sustainably as well as some of her tricks for making game meat tender and delicious.  Check them out here: Part 1, Part 2.

Now I know you want one of Stacy’s books for yourself and I don’t blame you a bit.  Recipes and Tips for Sustainable Living would also make a great gift for a hunter or gardener in your life (or the person who cooks for them).  You can get it on Amazon, or you might get lucky and win an autographed copy right here!  Stacy graciously sent me two autographed copies to give away to my readers.
